10 Ways to Protect Your Hair this Winter

Winter can really do a number on our skin and hair! I don’t know about you but I always feel so DRY this time of year, and I feel like I am constantly applying lotions and moisturizers to give me some relief.  We want our hair to look amazing all-year round, right?! Unfortunately, winter takes its toll on our hair and skin. Freezing temperatures, rain, and wind combined with the lack of humidity means your scalp is more prone to dehydration, resulting in dryness. Thankfully, theres something you can do to save your hair from the harshness of winter!

10 Ways to Protect Your Hair this Winter

1. Keep hair washing to a minimum. If possible, try and limited yourself to washing your hair just two or three times a week to prevent it from drying out in the cold.  A great way to do this is to alternate between dry shampoo and wet shampoo! My favorite is the The Champ Dry Shampoo by Monat.

2. Use a sulphate-free shampoo, sulfates can strip your hair of it’s natural oils, this is one of the many reasons I use Monat.  The hydration line has been a lifesaver already and my hair is free of build up caused by sulfates!

3. Condition! Protect your hair from cold weather by choosing a high quality conditionerfor in the shower, but also use something like Monat’s leave in conditioner for extra nourishment and to help with flyaways and frizz as a bonus!

4. Oil Treatments! Use Monat’s Rejuenique Oil on your scalp at least once a week over night.  This will help your dry scalp and restore some of the natural essential oils.

5. Avoid really hot showers, turning up the water to a really high heat can hurt your scalp and skin.

6. Avoid ponytails, or if you do, use a silk hair tie! This will help prevent unnecessary breakage.

7. Wear a hat! Beanies are so trendy right now anyways & you might as well protect your hair and keep yourself warm!

8. Use a hydrating mask once a week! This one always makes my hair feel so good, I leave it in for about 5 minutes before rinsing it out!

9. Hydrate! Drink lots of water to hydrate your scalp and skin from the inside out. Aim to drink half of your body weight in ounces a day.

10. Use a humidifier.  Usually we only pull this out when Hazel is sick, but this is a great way to add humidity in your home during the dry winter months!
